The transversal through the Coast Mountains in Montenegro

  All details regarding this Transversal:

The special appeal of the Transversal Route is heightened by the fact that the entire route passes through the most precious natural areas of Montenegro's coastal region, some of which enjoy the highest degree of natural protection.

The Orjen region belongs to the most renowned hydrological and karst (limestone formation with deep fissures) phenomena in Europe and boasts an abundance of endemic and ancient fiora and fauna; hence it is proposed for a future regional natural park.

The Bay of Kotor with its hinterland is among the most beautiful fiords not only in Europe, but in the world, and is consequently included in the list of "a hundred most beautiful bays in the world".
Due to its natural, cultural, historical and ethnographic values, Lovćen was proclaimed a National Park in 1952. The area abounds in specific flora and fauna which, particularly during the last century, was researched by a large number of foreign and local scholars such as Baldacci, Rohlen and Pančić. The wider area of Lovćen exhibits numerous geomorphologic and hydrological phenomena such as caves, pits, chasms, funnel-shaped holes, springs and particularly attractive vantage points.

Rumija, a cult mountain to which a large number of historical legends are linked, separates the Adriatic Sea from Skadar Lake, the largest lake in the Balkans, which, due to its unique natural formations and values, has been pronounced a National Park. It is also included in the Ramsar Convention list of protected objects of the world's ornithofauna. In addition to the specific coastal flora and fauna, Rumija is famous for its large number of mountain springs. At the foot of this mountain, both in the coastal part and in the area near Skadar Lake, it is possible to discover a multitude of recent and ancient monuments, many of which are now in ruins but retain great cultural and historical value.

The Transversal Route, which from one end to the other totals 138 kilometres, is split into six sections (the Orijen, Boka, Lovćen, Paštrovići, Crmnica and Rumija).
The route is also punctuated with fifteen control points and three mountain peaks: Zubački kabao on Mount Orjen (with an altitude of 1,894 m), Jezerski vrh on Mount Lovćen (1,657 m) and lastly, the peak of Rumija (l,595 m).
A number of marked walking trails link up with the Transversal Route. These start mainly from the south of the country, beginning near the coast, but there are also some starting in the north from Cetinje and Lake Skadar. These are mostly former caravan tracks, which in the past used to connect the coastal and continental parts of Montenegro. Those which start from Risan, Kotor, Budva, Petrovac and Bar stand out for their stunning natural beauty.

The fact that the greatest part of the hike takes place along the craggy part of them mountainous hinterland of the Adriatic Sea, with an array of exceptional vantage points, adds special appeal to the Transversal Route.
Outstanding panoramic views of the Montenegrin coast, the basin of Skadar Lake and the mountainous part of the country can be appreciated from: Dobraštica, Subra, Zubački kabao, Ledenica, Zalaz, Ćerinski vrh, Krstac, Jezerski vrh, Koločunske grede, Mojanski vrh, Brajići, Kosmač, Mijović krš, Trirog, Sutorman, Bijele skale, the peak of Rumija and Loška on Lisinje.
The Transversal Route encompasses a large number of former military fortifications erected in the past century or earlier, on the border between Montenegro and the Ottoman and Austro-Hungarian empires. The most renowned among them are Crkvice, Kosmač and Sutorman. A particularly interesting trait of the area of Orjen, Lovćen and Rumija is a very high annual level of precipitation, among the highest in Europe (Crkvice 8,000 mm/m'). However, due to the exceptionally karst character of the soil, natural springs are scarce, rendering water supplies on the Transversal Route significantly low, particularly in the summer and autumn months. Apart from the small number of springs, stone water tanks and specially constructed wells were used in former villages.

The cultural and historical monument which stands out the most, both by its historical significance and monumental air, is undoubtedly Njegoš's Mausoleum on Jezerski vrh on Lovćen. It is open for most of the year, but tourists should be aware that it is necessary to make special arrangements in advance with Montenegro Voyage tourist agency, to be able to visit.

A walking tour along the whole of the mountaineering Transversal Route lasts for up to ten days, depending on the fitness and pace of the mountaineers. The route may be approached from the north and the south.

The Transversal Route is divided in several Transversal Routes, witch are:
