Markings for the difficulty of the hiking trail:

One of the important points when organizing a hiking trip is choosing a suitable hiking trail. It means something different to everyone. Someone prefers long distances, someone likes the challenges of climbing, and someone else likes to enjoy the beautiful view. Whatever an ideal and interesting hiking trail means to you, you must know one thing - read its weight markings. The universal markings for the difficulty of a hiking trail indicate how physically and technically demanding the trail in question is and what the height difference is.

What is easy for someone, what is demanding, and what is difficult is often a personal impression and depends on mountaineering experience and physical condition and readiness. When you read about the trails and the experience of other mountaineers, keep in mind that their impression does not necessarily mean that ”the trail will be cat's cough" or "a real challenge" for you too.

What should you pay attention to when choosing the weight of a hiking trail?
However, there are certain items that you can study. In the first place, there is the mileage, the type of terrain, the height difference and the type of track. Of course, if you have walked on flat terrain up to a maximum of five kilometers, you will certainly find it challenging to walk on a similar terrain with a length of 15 kilometers.

Keep in mind that hiking is a physical activity and like any other activity, you gradually raise the bar. We also hike for the enjoyment of nature, and we certainly won't be able to do that if we set ourselves a path that is too demanding.

You’ve probably come across labels like K3, T1 and VR3 by now, and it wasn't at all clear to you what those labels stand for.

In order to mark trails better and more simply, there are universal marks for the difficulty of hiking trails, which are divided into three items: fitness level (K), technical level (T) and height difference (VR). The condition and technical difficulty go up to number 4, while the height difference goes up to 5. The numbers in this case indicate the difficulty of the track for a particular item, and the letter, logically, explains which item is in question.

Fitness requirement
K1 – Easy. Less than 5 hours walking
K2 – Moderately demanding. 5-7 hours of walking
K3 – Demanding. 7-9 hours of walking
K4 – Very demanding. More than 9 hours of walking

Technical requirements
T1 – Undemanding. Walking without the use of hands and aids
T2 – Moderately demanding. Walking and occasional use of hands. Easy climbing
T3 – Demanding. Occasional climbing with the use of hands and aids, in winter occasional use of crampons and ice axes
T4 – Very demanding. Longer and more demanding trails of secured roads, constant climbing. Constant use of crampons and ice axes in winter.

Height difference
VR1 - 0 m - 250 m. Lightly
VR2 - 250 m - 500 m. Moderately light
VR3 - 500 m - 750 m. Moderately demanding.
VR4 - 750 m - 1000 m. Demanding
VR5 – More than 1,000 m. Very demanding.

How to read the markings for the difficulty of a hiking trail and how to choose a trail according to difficulty?
Now that you know the universal markings for the difficulty of a hiking trail, it is time to to choose a trail according to Your fitness.
If you are a beginner, you start with K1, T1 and maximum VR2. Always take into account the height difference you will pass during the chosen excursion. It is not the same to pass K1 and T1 with a height difference of 100 meters or more than 300 meters. Always choose easier paths before harder ones. Also, if you have not yet encountered trails where you have to use your hands or climb in parts, choose T2 for the beginning and T3 later.

Also keep in mind the type of terrain and weather conditions. The same mileage on the karst or in the forest is not equally hard/light. Snow, rain, mud and storms also make hiking difficult.

Personally, when presenting each hiking trail, I leave my own impression of its difficulty. Of course, it is quite individual, but along with the description of the track, I also state the mileage and duration of the track, the type of terrain, and you can also study the GPS track. Based on this, everyone can judge whether the trail in question is easy or demanding.

When organizing a hiking trip and choosing a suitable trail, take into account not only your fitness but also the physical fitness of your fellow hikers. Safety and enjoyment come first, so choose the trail for your next trip accordingly. And it is always better to underestimate than to overestimate. Nature is merciless and unforgiving in this matter.
